Plot Overview
Set during the French intervention in Mexico (1860s), Hogan (Clint Eastwood), a pragmatic American mercenary, saves a woman named Sara (Shirley MacLaine) from a gang of bandits in the Mexican desert. To his surprise, Sara reveals she is a Catholic nun raising money for Mexican revolutionaries fighting against the invading French forces.
Hogan agrees to escort Sara to a rebel camp, as their goals align: he has been hired to help the revolutionaries capture a heavily fortified French garrison in exchange for half of the garrison’s gold reserve. Throughout their arduous journey across the wilderness, Hogan is constantly baffled by Sara’s unconventional behavior, her penchant for whiskey and cigars, and her surprisingly detailed tactical knowledge of the French military stronghold.
As they team up to destroy a crucial French ammunition train and infiltrate the garrison, Hogan uncovers Sara’s true identity—she is actually a prostitute disguised as a nun to evade French authorities and aid the resistance. Working together, they pull off the daring garrison assault and ride off with the gold.
