Plot Overview
On the outside, Laura (Julia Roberts) and Martin Burney (Patrick Bergin) appear to have the perfect life, living in a beautiful, modern, absolute beachfront home in Cape Cod. In reality, Martin is a wealthy, obsessively controlling, and physically abusive husband who suffers from extreme obsessive-compulsive tendencies—demanding absolute perfection down to the precise alignment of hand towels in the bathroom.
Desperate to escape the cycle of domestic violence, Laura meticulously plans a breakout. Because she cannot swim, Martin believes she is safe on the water. During a sudden storm on a nighttime sailing trip, Laura fakes her own drowning by slipping overboard. Having secretly taken swimming lessons for months, she swims to shore, retrieves a hidden bag of clothes, and flees to Cedar Falls, Iowa.
Reinventing herself as “Sara Waters,” she starts a new life and begins a gentle, healthy romance with a kind local drama teacher named Ben Woodward (Kevin Anderson). However, her fragile peace is shattered when Martin discovers her wedding ring flushed down the toilet and realizes she is still alive. Using his immense wealth and tracking skills, Martin obsessively hunts her down to reclaim his “possession.”
