Plot Overview
Bill Dancer (Jim Belushi) is a warm-hearted homeless drifter living on the streets of Chicago with an orphaned nine-year-old girl named Curly Sue (Alisan Porter). Bill has raised Sue as his own daughter since she was an infant following her mother’s death. To survive, the duo stage low-stakes, harmless scams—primarily to secure hot meals and basic shelter.
During one of their staged cons, Bill pretends to get hit by a car driven by Grey Ellison (Kelly Lynch), a wealthy, career-focused corporate attorney. Feeling guilty, Grey buys them dinner. Shortly after, when Bill is accidentally knocked down by Grey for real, she insists on taking Bill and Sue into her luxurious penthouse apartment to recuperate.
As Grey spends time with Sue and Bill, her hardened exterior melts. She notices Sue’s intelligence and charm, as well as Bill’s deep love and protective devotion as a father. However, Grey’s arrogant fiancé, Walker McCormick (John Getz), grows jealous and reports Bill to child welfare services, threatening to tear the unconventional family apart.
