Plot Overview

During the Cold War, Spetsnaz operative Lieutenant Nikolai Petrovitch Rachenko (Dolph Lundgren), an elite Russian assassin, is deployed to a fictitious African nation suffering under a Soviet-backed communist regime. His mission: infiltrate the anti-communist rebel group and assassinate their charismatic leader, Kunda (Al White).

Nikolai breaks into a military prison to free a rebel fighter and an outspoken American journalist, Dewey Ferguson (M. Emmet Walsh), using them to gain entry into the rebel stronghold. However, when Nikolai hesitates to execute Kunda, his mission fails. Disowned, tortured, and left for dead in the desert by his own commanders, he is rescued by the indigenous Bushmen tribe.

Living among the tribe, Nikolai undergoes a spiritual transformation and adopts their sacred tattoo—a scorpion—on his chest. Realizing the brutal oppression enforced by the Soviet forces, he turns against his former country and joins forces with the rebels to launch a violent assault against the Soviet command base.
