Plot Overview
Months have passed without an arrest in the brutal rape and murder of Angela Hayes. Frustrated by the lack of progress, her grieving mother, Mildred Hayes (Frances McDormand), rents three unused billboards on a road leading into the town of Ebbing, Missouri.
The billboards carry a stark message directed at the town’s beloved police chief: “RAPED WHILE DYING,” “AND STILL NO ARRESTS?,” “HOW COME, CHIEF WILLOUGHBY?”
The public callout ignites a fierce confrontation between Mildred and the local authorities—particularly Chief Bill Willoughby (Woody Harrelson), who is secretly dying of pancreatic cancer, and Officer Jason Dixon (Sam Rockwell), an immature, short-tempered deputy prone to violence. As tensions escalate into arson, assault, and public backlash, Mildred refuses to back down, sparking a chaotic sequence of events that forces everyone involved to confront grief, anger, and the possibility of redemption.
