Plot Overview
In 1986, 5-year-old Saroo (Sunny Pawar) lives with his impoverished family in Khandwa, India. While sweeping trains at night with his older brother Guddu (Abhishek Bharate), Saroo falls asleep in an empty passenger train car. He wakes up to find the train moving, carrying him over 1,500 kilometers across India to Kolkata (Calcutta), where he doesn’t speak the local Bengali language and cannot remember the name of his hometown.
After months surviving on the harsh streets of Kolkata, Saroo is placed in an orphanage and subsequently adopted by a loving Australian couple, Sue (Nicole Kidman) and John Brierley (David Wenham), who raise him in Tasmania.
Twenty-five years later, 30-year-old Saroo (Dev Patel) is pursuing hotel management in Melbourne. Haunted by memories of his childhood, his brother, and his biological mother, he becomes consumed by a quest to find his birthplace using satellite imagery on Google Earth. Calculating train speeds and topography based on his fragmented 5-year-old memories, Saroo embarks on an agonizing multi-year search that tests his relationships with his adoptive parents and girlfriend Lucy (Rooney Mara), ultimately leading him back to India for an emotional reunion.
