Plot Overview
In 1979, soldier Hu Bayi (Mark Chao) is stationed in the Kunlun Mountains when an explosion unearths ancient fossilized bones of unknown giant creatures. A team led by Professor Yang and his daughter Yang Ping (Yao Chen) ventures deep into the mountain caverns to investigate.
Deep underground, the team discovers the “Nine-Story Demon Tower”—a mystical gateway holding back an ancient alien civilization known as the Ghostly Tribe. After lethal attacks by deadly bat-like creatures and prehistoric beasts, only Hu Bayi survives the expedition, while Yang Ping disappears into the abyss.
Years later, Hu Bayi leads a quiet life in Beijing until he discovers that ancient monstrous forces are reawakening across China. He joins a secret government organization known as Bureau 74 to track down the truth. Reunited with a mysterious woman who looks identical to Yang Ping but calls herself Shirley Yang, Hu Bayi must venture into the desert ruins of Dunhuang to confront giant beasts and seal the gateway before the Ghostly Tribe reclaims Earth.
