Plot Overview
In the colorful, matrilineal matriarchy of Barbieland, Stereotypical Barbie (Margot Robbie) and a diverse array of other Barbies and Kens enjoy idyllic daily routines. However, Barbie suffers a sudden existential crisis—experiencing uncharacteristic thoughts of mortality, flat feet, and cellulite.
Guided by Weird Barbie (Kate McKinnon), Barbie must travel into the Real World to find the human playing with her whose emotions are altering her physical state. Her enamored companion Beach Ken (Ryan Gosling) stows away for the journey. Arriving in modern-day Los Angeles, Barbie locates her owner, Mattel employee Gloria (America Ferrera), and her cynical teenage daughter Sasha (Ariana Greenblatt).
While Barbie struggles with the harsh social realities and existential pressures facing real human women, Ken discovers the concept of patriarchy. Inspired, Ken returns to Barbieland ahead of her, indoctrinates the other Kens, and transforms the feminist utopia into a male-dominated “Kendom.” Barbie, Gloria, and Sasha must return to Barbieland to deprogram the brainwashed Barbies, dismantle the Kendom, and help both Barbies and Kens discover their individual identities.
