Plot Overview
Marla Grayson (Rosamund Pike) is a ruthless professional court-appointed guardian who operates a lucrative scam exploiting elderly citizens. By bribing a corrupt physician to declare wealthy seniors unfit to care for themselves, Marla obtains legal guardianship over them, forces them into assisted-living facilities, cuts off their family contact, and auctions off their assets for her personal profit.
Marla and her business partner/lover Fran (Eiza González) target Jennifer Peterson (Dianne Wiest), a wealthy retiree with no apparent living relatives or family baggage. Marla easily obtains guardianship and confines Jennifer to a care home, immediately beginning to liquidate her home and safety deposit boxes.
However, Marla soon discovers that Jennifer is far from a helpless victim. She is actually the mother of Roman Lunyov (Peter Dinklage), a powerful and dangerous Russian mob boss. When Roman’s legal threats fail to intimidate Marla into releasing his mother, a brutal, high-stakes game of cat-and-mouse erupts between the ruthless legal scammer and the ruthless mobster.
