Plot Overview

Retired detective “Big Bob” Carter (Ted Levine) and his wife Ethel (Kathleen Quinlan) are traveling across the Southwestern United States in a travel trailer with their children Brenda (Emilie de Ravin) and Bobby (Dan Byrd), elder daughter Lynn (Vinessa Shaw), her pacifist cell phone salesman husband Doug (Aaron Stanford), and their baby daughter Catherine.

A sinister gas station attendant intentionally directs the family onto an unmapped dirt road through the New Mexico desert. After spike traps blow out their tires, the family is stranded miles from civilization inside a former U.S. government nuclear testing zone.

Night falls, and a clan of horrific, physically deformed mutants—descendants of miners exposed to fallout during 1950s atomic weapons tests—stalk the trailer. led by Lizard (Robert Joy) and Pluto (Michael Bailey Smith), the mutants launch a violent raid, executing Big Bob, Ethel, and Lynn while abducting baby Catherine. Left for dead, Doug sheds his mild-mannered pacifism, picks up weapons, and ventures deep into the eerie, mannequin-filled abandoned nuclear test town to rescue his baby daughter before the mutants slaughter her.
